The Red Lake Nation College reached a major academic milestone by achieving Higher Learning Commission (HLC), Candidacy for Accreditation status in November 2016. This means Red Lake Nation College is demonstrating the expected standards of excellence in higher education. This period of Candidacy typically lasts up to four years in duration.
As of July 1, 2017, Red Lake Nation College will no longer be an additional location of Leech Lake Tribal College, but will instead be an independent, unaccredited institution. College credits earned can still be transferred to other institutions and count towards degree completion.
